About Scrap Gold Calculator

Empowering gold sellers, jewelers, estate liquidators, and precious metal investors with transparent, real-time gold melt valuation tools.

Who We Are

Scrap Gold Calculator is an independent calculator website that publishes scrap-gold melt-value and payout-estimation tools. The site combines documented weight and purity formulas with current price inputs from third-party data providers. Results are informational estimates, not assays, appraisals, binding buyer offers, or investment advice.

What We Do

We build, maintain, and publish free, independent scrap-gold valuation tools with supporting precious-metal market reference data:

  • Melt Value Calculations: Instantly evaluate purities across karat tiers (such as 10K, 14K, 18K, 22K, 24K) and convert between major weight units (grams, pennyweights, troy ounces, grains, milligrams).
  • Buyer Payout Modeling: Model customizable payout percentages and optional fee deductions to estimate net cash before comparing commercial offers.
  • Market Reference Data: Reference current spot rates for Gold, Silver, Platinum, and Palladium from third-party data providers.
  • Specialized Karat & Item Tools: Dedicated calculators for 10K, 14K, 18K, 22K/24K, Scrap Jewelry, Gold Coins, and Gold-Filled items.

Calculation & Editorial Methodology

Our calculators operate on standard metallurgical formulas, documented unit conversions, and transparent price inputs. Every calculation follows this core sequence:

Melt Value = Weight ร— Unit Conversion ร— (Karat รท 24) ร— Spot Price

1. Karat Purity Ratios: Standard karat ratings divide pure gold into 24 parts (e.g., 10K = 10/24 โ‰ˆ 41.67%, 14K = 14/24 โ‰ˆ 58.33%, 18K = 18/24 = 75.0%, 22K = 22/24 โ‰ˆ 91.67%). For 24K gold, the calculator preset uses 0.999 (99.9% fine gold) by stated practical convention.

2. Exact Unit Conversions: Calculations convert weights to troy ounces using exact standards: 1 troy ounce (oz t) = 31.1034768 grams = 20 pennyweights (DWT) = 480 grains.

3. Gold-Filled Layer Ratios: For gold-filled items (marked GF), the fine-gold fraction equals the marked layer ratio multiplied by the karat purity of the layer (e.g., 1/20 12K GF = 1/20 ร— 12/24 = 0.025 or 2.5% fine gold).

4. Price-Data Retrieval & Benchmark Fallback: Live spot rates are retrieved from third-party market data feeds. If a live feed is unavailable or market trading is closed, the system displays a clearly labeled reference benchmark with separate checked timestamps rather than claiming live status.

5. Melt Value vs. Buyer Payouts: Theoretical melt value is not a guaranteed cash offer. Commercial buyer payments reflect refining fees, assay costs, smelting loss factors, and buyer margins. We provide customizable payout modeling tools without prescribing unsupported industry-average payout rates.

Editorial Process & Limitations

All articles and tool guidance published on Scrap Gold Calculator are checked against official metallurgical references and primary government consumer guidance before release.

Limitations: Calculations are informational estimations only and do not constitute formal assays, professional jewelry appraisals, investment advice, or binding commercial purchase offers. Actual scrap-gold transactions require physical inspection, accurate weight determination, and purity testing by a certified assayer or buyer.
