Three steps — inspect markings, weigh clean scrap, calculate gold yield
Compare the marked gold-alloy fraction first, then the karat. A 1/10 piece carries twice the marked gold-alloy fraction of a 1/20 piece, and a 14K layer contains more gold than a 12K layer of the same marked fraction.
Gold-filled pocket watch cases can vary widely in total weight and construction once movements are removed. As a hypothetical illustration, a 40g 1/20 12K GF case contains 1.0g of fine gold (yielding $75 at a hypothetical $75/g spot price; actual value fluctuates with live market spot rates).
Gold-filled eyeglass frames and pens are examples of possible GF scrap. Exclude lenses, plastic parts, ink cartridges, and other non-GF components from the eligible weight where practical.
What makes gold-filled different from solid gold and gold plating
Gold-filled material consists of a karat-gold layer bonded to a base-metal core. Many marked pieces use a 1/20 standard, but the exact marked fraction can vary by item and stamp.
In gold-filled items, a sheet of karat gold is heat-and-pressure bonded to a brass core. Unlike thin electroplating (which wears off quickly), gold-filled layer thickness resists tarnish and wear for decades.
Gold-filled scrap includes a base-metal core, so buyers may sort, strip, or batch it differently from solid karat gold before estimating recovery. Ask the buyer how processing and deductions are reflected in the net quote.
Watch for stamps like '1/20 14K RGP' (Rolled Gold Plate) or 'HGE' (Heavy Gold Electroplate) — these have thinner gold layers than genuine 1/20 GF items.

Gold-filled material uses a mechanically bonded karat-gold layer over a base-metal core. The marked fraction can vary, so check stamps such as 1/20 or 1/10 before estimating value.
Multiply gross weight by the marked gold-alloy fraction, multiply that result by the layer's karat purity, then apply the live 24K spot rate. That gives a theoretical melt value before buyer deductions.
Gold-filled usually has a thicker mechanically bonded gold layer than ordinary plating, so it may contain more recoverable gold. The actual value still depends on the item's markings, condition, and buyer process.
Look for stamps like '1/20 12K GF', '1/20 14K GF', '1/10 10K GF', or 'Gold Filled' on watch cases, frames, and chains.
Buyer acceptance of gold-filled material varies. Ask whether the buyer processes GF items, what minimum lot or marking requirements apply, and how testing and deductions affect the net quote.
Start with the current spot price, convert it to a per-gram 24K rate, then multiply by 100 grams, by the 1/20 gold-alloy ratio, and by the 14K purity fraction. The result is a theoretical melt value before buyer deductions.
A marked vintage GF pocket watch case may have recoverable gold-layer value after the movement and other non-GF parts are excluded. The estimate depends on the marked layer ratio, layer karat, eligible weight, condition, and buyer process.
