How Hallmark Numbers Map to Scrap Gold Purity

Fineness marks tell you how much pure gold is inside the alloy. Learn what 375, 417, 585, 750, 916 and 999 gold hallmarks mean in our detailed guide.

417 and 585

These are the most common fineness marks for 10K and 14K jewelry. They show up often on rings, chains, and estate pieces sold into the scrap market.

750 and 916

750 usually maps to 18K, while 916 points to 22K. These marks are common on imported fine jewelry, Middle Eastern sets, and South Asian gold.

999 and 999.9

These marks indicate near-pure gold and appear most often on bullion, investment bars, and high-purity coins rather than everyday jewelry.

How to Use a Gold Hallmark

Read the mark, confirm the weight, then price the fine-gold content

1
Read the stamp
Look inside the ring shank, on chain clasps, bracelet end tabs, watch backs, or coin edges for a hallmark number.
Common examples are 375, 417, 585, 750, 916, 999, and 999.9.
2
Enter the weight
The hallmark identifies purity, but the weight tells you how much gold is actually in the item.
Remove stones and non-gold parts first if the buyer will deduct them anyway.
3
Check the live melt value
Once purity and weight are paired, the calculator converts the hallmark into fine-gold content and current scrap value.
That lets you compare a buyer quote against a live theoretical melt-value benchmark.

Calculations use standard weight and purity formulas with live market spot prices. See our Calculation & Editorial Methodology for complete formula steps and limitation disclosures.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gold Hallmarks

585 means the alloy is 58.5% pure gold, which is the normal fineness equivalent of 14K gold.

750 is the standard fineness mark for 18K gold because 750 parts out of 1000 are pure gold.

Hallmarks are a useful starting point, but worn, altered, or counterfeit pieces should still be tested if the transaction is significant.

Use a separate test. Unmarked pieces should not be valued as if they were confirmed 10K, 14K, or 18K without verification.
